Up to 50,000 dwt3 tugs

50,000 – 130,000 dwt2 large tugs and 2 small tugs

130,000 – 135,000 dwt3 large tugs and one small tug

over 135,000 dwt4 large tugs

NB Subject to reasonable weather conditions vessels of up to 160,000 dwt at a max draft of 16.7m are generally handled by the above rules. With certain vessels and particularly when it has been agreed that 160,000 dwt or 16.7 m can be exceeded, weather conditions or other criteria may dictate an additional tug or tugs being employed to assist with berthing.

Swansea Towage Guidelines

Depending on the berth and weather the minimum requirement is:-

For vessels more than 125m (410ft) LOA with bow thruster1 tug

For vessels more than 125m (410ft) LOA without bow thruster2 tugs

For vessels more than 22.9m (75ft) beam without bow thruster3tugs (2 if tractor)
